- Ability to play along to me on the piano or guitar
- How to work out out a beat/rhythm/drum part by ear
- How to count and how to read drum notation/lead sheets
- How to write drum notation
- How to improvise/ad lib and compose drum parts
- The use of tempo and dynamics in helping convey the mood and character
of music
- How to tune a drum kit/set up a drum kit for ease of play
